Holiday Pet Safety Tips: Halloween

Festive events can be exciting—but for pets, they can also bring unexpected risks.

From sweets and decorations to costumes and increased foot traffic, a few simple precautions can help keep your pet safe, calm, and comfortable during any celebration.

At River Mill Animal Hospital, we recommend the following tips to protect your pet during busy, high-activity events.

Keep Treats Out of Reach

Sweets are one of the most common pet hazards.

  • Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, and even seizures
  • Xylitol (found in sugar-free candy and gum) can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar

👉 Keep all candy and treats stored safely away from pets.

Watch Decorations & Electrical Cords

Decorations can be tempting—but dangerous.

  • Open flames (like candles or lit décor) can be knocked over and cause burns or fire
  • Decorative items (corn, small objects, etc.) can cause intestinal blockages if ingested
  • Electrical cords can lead to serious injury if chewed

Be Mindful with Costumes

Costumes aren’t for every pet—and that’s okay.

If you choose to dress your pet:

  • Make sure it does not restrict movement, breathing, or vision
  • Avoid small or dangling pieces that could be chewed or swallowed
  • Monitor your pet for signs of stress or discomfort

👉 If your pet isn’t comfortable, a simple festive bandana is a great alternative.

Create a Calm, Secure Space

Increased activity, noise, and visitors can overwhelm pets.

  • Consider placing your pet in a quiet room or crate
  • Provide familiar items like bedding or toys
  • Limit exposure to the front door and constant activity

This helps reduce anxiety and prevents escape attempts.

Prevent Door Dashes

Frequent door opening increases the risk of pets getting out.

Make sure your pet has:

  • A collar with current ID tags
  • An up-to-date microchip
  • Proper identification is essential for a safe return home.
